Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – General Motors announced Wednesday that it would start selling its first all-electric Chevrolet small car in the United States starting in 2013. The electric concept will debut after the launch of the gasoline version in 2012.

The Chevrolet Spark EV minicar will compete with Nissan Motor’s Leaf, currently the only all-battery powered car available in the U.S. from a major auto maker.

GM did not provide additional information such as pricing or expected driving mileage on a full charge.

The verdict is still out about whether U.S. consumers are ready for all-electric vehicles. Charging stations and reliability remain top concerns.

U.S. Open 2011 Preview: Phil Mickelson turns 41, he’s excited and upbeat

June 16th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Bethesda, MD, United States (AHN Sports) – Lefty turns 41 on Thursday.

That afternoon, Phillip Alfred Mickelson will tee off in the 111th U.S. Open, searching for his first win in this major championship that has eluded him for 20 years.

He’s finished runner-up five times starting in 1999 at Pinehurst when Payne Stewart embraced him at the 72nd hole and told him to be happy and proud because he (Mickelson) was about to become a father.

It was the beginning of Mickelson’s close-call legacy in our national championship. He was runner-up again in 2002, 2004 and 2006 then most recently in 2009. Despite his shortcomings in the Open, Mickelson is upbeat, excited, ever the optimist.

“I feel terrific,” Mickelson said as he wrapped up his preparations at Congressional Country Club, a beast of a course that will be the longest in Open history. “I’m more flexible and stronger than I have been in a long time.”

He’s learned to live with his psoriatic arthritis. He says his swing is “longer and more flowing, it’s not quite as violent.”

Mickelson will need his swing and short game to be in order this week as this venue figures to be what the USGA wants it to be — a stern test and a complete examination of a golfer’s skills. It’s goal is to identify the best player for the four days.

“I think it’s a wonderfully fair test for such a difficult, long course,” Mickelson observed. “It’s a matter of picking your spots. I’m not going to play perfect golf. I’m not going to hit every fairway.”

Mickelson says he plans to hit a lot of drivers, figuring he’d rather get as close to the greens as possible and deal with the rough from shorter distances. He’s also added a souped-up two-iron to his bag for use on selected tee shots.

You can see a good demeanor in Mickelson, perhaps due to the fact that after supporting his wife and mother through their battles with breast cancer, he knows that golf is perhaps less important than he once viewed it.

He’s also learned through his previous failures.

“If you focus on the result, if you focus so much on winning, sometimes you can get in your own way,” he said. “I am trying to enjoy the challenge.”

The challenge will begin on his birthday afternoon at 1:35 when he tees off the 10th hole with young Rory McIlroy and long-hitting Dustin Johnson.

Happy birthday, Lefty.

Spencer Massey wins NHRA Top Fuel in NJ

June 6th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Elizabethtown, NJ, United States (AHN Sports) – Spencer Massey scored his second straight win of the season Sunday in the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Joining Massey on the winner’s podium was Mike Neff (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) at the eighth of 22 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

“It’s awesome to beat the Alan Johnson/Al-Anabi/Del Worsham car in the final,” said Massey. “The Al-Anabi car has been on a roll and running killer numbers, so we knew we had to be on our ‘A’ game, that the car had to run well and I had to be on my game. I even had a Full Throttle to amp myself up before I got in there.”

In the Top Fuel final, Massey got his fourth career win when he made a winning pass of 319.07 mph in topping Worsham.

In the Funny Car final, Neff held off top qualifer Cruz Pedregon for his second win of the season. Neff’s run of 314.09 was solid after Pedregon red-lighted at the start.

“I knew he red-lighted,” said Neff. “I was sitting there waiting for the Tree to come down, and I heard him leave and knew he red-lighted because the Tree hadn’t come down yet. I looked over and saw that his bulb was red, then I looked up and saw our win light on.

“By that time, I had already hit the gas and was taking off and saw our win light on. I wanted to see what it would run, then I was saying ‘Don’t drive over the centerline or something.’ Wouldn’t you lose if you did that? Yeah, maybe I should have lifted.”

In the Pro Stock final, Johnson held off rookie sensation Vincent Nobile for his first win of the season.

Johnson’s pass of 210.64 mph was unnecessary after Nobile red-lighted at the start.

“It was a dream to have an all-team final round and to have it happen this early in the season is a dream come true,” said Johnson, who provides engines for Nobile. “I’m very proud of our engine guys and Mark (Ingersoll, crew chief) who makes the tuning calls. Vincent is a fierce competitor and I’m sure we’re going to tangle a few more times before this is over.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Smith held off points leader Karen Stoffer to grab his first win of the season.

Oxfam warns about rising global food prices as one-sixth of all people go hungry

June 4th, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans
Linda Young – AHN News Writer

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – Oxfam warns that as global food prices continue to increase the resultant hardship caused to people who were already struggling to obtain adequate amounts of food is increasing demands for a major reform in global food prices.

When world food prices reached a new historic peak in January, it left over a billion people, or one-sixth of the world’s population, hungry and millions of people under threat of starvation, with the situation expected to worsen, Oxfam officials say.

Oxfam is calling on world leaders to act to improve the regulation of food markets. In addition, it is asking for investment in a global climate fund.

World food prices have more than doubled since 1990, but the incomes of the poor have not.

“Poor people in developing countries spend between 50-80% of their income on food, making higher prices, as well as unpredictable prices, a serious threat to their ability to eat – let alone continue spending on other basic needs such as health, or education,” Oxfam officials say in a statement posted on the website.

The key drivers of rising food prices are reduced production caused by bad weather that might be linked to climate change; export restrictions and panic buying mostly caused by weather related problems; increased demand for food and for biofuels, which removes land from food production; financial disruptions, including low interest rates, depreciation of the dollar and speculation in commodity markets; and increased oil prices that increased the costs of fertilizer for crops and transportation to get food to market or stores.

Transportation workers sick-outs mar Trenton, N.J. school bus service

May 29th, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans

Trenton, NJ, United States (AHN) – Trenton Public Schools officials are working to continue bus service for students after transportation workers started a sick-out late in the week.

As state budget wrangling continues, the district is moving ahead with plans to privatize its school bus service, contending it could save about $2 million.

About half (15) of the district’s 29 transportation workers reportedly called in sick Thursday, though the number was reduced to about a third (9) Friday according to a school official. The 29 are a part of 196 school employees who recently learned they would lose their jobs to reduce the district’s school budget.

A report in the Trentonian stated 300 to 400 students missed school due to the school bus situation.

“So each of the (seven) drivers had to make three different runs, but that only covers 21 schools. There are 36 schools. Some students have to go to special schools as far out as Neptune. It’s a terrible mess. Kids are calling on the phones, left to stay at home, no way to get to school. Their parents have to take a bus to work, so they drop their child off, counting on a school bus to take them to school. Often they’re not picked up,” a source told the paper.

A school official admitted as much in a letter posted on the district’s website and sent home with students.

“We are experiencing a job action among our bus drivers,” interim superintendent Raymond Broach wrote. “This is causing delays in the pickup and delivery of our students and in some cases, (we’re) not picking up at all.”

With the drivers losing their jobs anyway, they will likely not be punished for their actions and the district will call upon drivers from other companies it has deals with — Rick Bus Co. and Delaware Valley Bus Line — to cover the gap in service, according to a report on nj.com.

Trenton Public Schools may get $12 million in additional school funding due to a recent action by the state legislature, but will still seek an outside vendor for its school bus service.

NASCAR’s Trevor Bayne released from Mayo Clinic, return expected soon

May 9th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Rochester, MN, United States (AHN Sports) – After undergoing testing and some evaluations last week Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne was released from the Mayo Clinic.

The 20-year old Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR Nationwide Series driver is expected to return to his driving duties with Roush and the Wood Brothers in the Sprint Cup Series this season.

“Trevor Bayne was seen by a team of Mayo Clinic specialists where he underwent a series of tests and consultations over the last week,” said Mayo Clinic neurologist Brian Crum, M.D. “He was admitted after suffering from nausea, fatigue and vision impairment. Since his admission, the nausea and fatigue have abated, and the vision impairment continues to be treated with medication, and is showing significant improvement.

“This symptom appears to be the result of an inflammatory condition. Further assessments will be made over the next couple of weeks. His condition is not life threatening or career-ending. We expect he will continue to improve, though the timeframe for his return to racing is unknown at this point. He will continue to be followed closely by his Mayo Clinic team.”

Bayne was not able to drive the No. 16 Roush Fenway Nationwide Series entry Friday at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway and no timeframe has been set for Bayne’s return.

Chris Buescher, who drove the No. 16 entry last week at Richmond, filled in for Bayne at Darlington.

Team officials are unsure of Bayne’s status for next week’s Nationwide Series race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway.

Initially, Bayne was hospitalized from complications from an insect bite earlier in the season, but after ongoing effects he sought further evaluation from the physicians at Mayo Clinic.

Del Worsham heads up NHRA winners in Texas

May 2nd, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Baytown, TX, United States (AHN Sports) – Del Worsham, Jeff Arend, Vincent Nobile and Andrew Hines were among the winners Sunday in the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Royal Purple Raceway.

Worsham continued his impressive driving by capturing the Top class while Arend on Funny Car, Vincent Nobile won Pro Stock and Andrew Hines captured Pro Stock Motorcycle.

“This is surreal,” said Worsham of his 28th career victory. “The way the day unfolded, we had some close races and it was amazing. The final was a heck of a race. I’ve got to give all the credit to the Al-Anabi team. I am just a small part of it. The cars are so evenly matched it’s just a matter of who’s hot at that given second. When I saw the win light come on down there I was like this is just another unbelievable day.”

Worsham defeated Al-Anabi Racing teammate Larry Dixon in the final to score his third win of the season and second in a row. Worsham beat Bob Vandergriff, David Grubnic and Doug Kalitta before slipping past Dixon in the final.

In the Funny Car final, Mike Neff fouled at the starting line and Arend crossed the finish line at 297.68 mph for his first win of the season and third of his career.

“We knew we needed a little bit of help against Mike because he was strong all weekend,” Arend said. “It was a long light and I kinda heard him go burp-burp, and I was going down the track thinking I should shut it off, but it was too much fun. You never know what is going to happen in drag racing and sometimes it surprises you. To get this win and dedicate it to Scott (Kalitta) that was huge.”

Rookie driver Vincent Nobile used a near-perfect reaction time of .007 of a second to score his first Pro Stock victory. At 19 he became the youngest driver to win NHRA’s 41-year-old factory hot rod category.

Hines scored his first win in Pro Stock Motorcycle and 24th of his career by holding off Michael Phillips in the final round.

“To come to Houston, a track that was our nemesis for 20 years, and get two wins in a row is pretty special,” Hines said. “These pewter Wallys are really cool. Eddie (Krawiec, teammate) won his at Gainesville and I told him I didn’t want to touch it until I got one of my own. I didn’t expect to win mine this fast, but I am glad to get it. My brother Matt (Hines, crew chief) gave me a great motorcycle all weekend long and it was consistent and going perfectly straight down the track.”

Boston brooms: Garnett, Rondo deliver double-doubles, C’s sweep Knicks

April 25th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
AHN Sports Staff

New York, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Kevin Garnett scored 26 points and hauled 10 boards to lead the Boston Celtics to a series-clinching 101-89 victory against the New York Knicks Sunday in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series at Madison Square Garden.

Coming off a four-point effort in Game 3, Garnett bounced back in a big way, unleashing his old dominant self against the reeling Knicks.

Garnett shot 10-for-16 on the floor and knocked down all of his six free throws to give the Celtics their first playoff-series sweep of the Big 3 era.

All-Star guard Rajon Rondo dominated again the backcourt matchup as he chipped in 21 points, 12 dimes, and 5 boards in 41 minutes.

The Celtics showed their intention right away, racing to a 29-23 lead at the end of the first period.

Backup forward Glen Davis then opened up the second quarter with two straight baskets to ignite a 13-5 spurt on their way to taking a 17-point cushion at the break.

With good execution and solid team defense, the Celtics controlled the pace of the game into the third and seemed destined for another blowout victory at the Garden.

However, the Knicks pulled off a desperate run in the fourth behind a hot-shooting Carmelo Anthony, who finished with 32 points and 9 boards.

The Knicks even cut down the deficit to four points, 84-80 with over 7 minutes left to play, but the Celtics responded with better defense and big baskets down the stretch to pull away for good.

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined for 27 points and Davis contributed 14 points off the bench.

Meanwhile, Amare Stoudemire chalked up 19 points and 12 boards, but the Knicks missed the leadership of guard Chauncey Billups, who went down in Game 1 and didn’t return.

Rebounding was again a key factor in the game as the Celtics grabbed 11 more boards than the Knicks. The Celtics also shot .494 from the field, while the Knicks settled for just .341 shooting.

The Celtics advanced to their fourth consecutive Conference semifinal appearance and will face either the Miami Heat or the Philadelphia 76ers next week.

Mike Conway wins Grand Prix of Long Beach

April 18th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Long Beach, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – Mike Conway completed his comeback from a crash last year by passing Ryan Briscoe late in the race to win Sunday’s Grand Prix of Long Beach IZOD IndyCar Series race.

Conway, who sustained serious injuries in the 2010 Indianapolis 500, got around Briscoe in Turn 6 on Lap 72 of 85 to capture the 37th running of the race.

“It feels awesome. As soon as I got in the lead, I was thinking of winning already. I knew I had to forget about it and get with the job at hand. The car was great. I could push all the time and control the gap. I can’t thank everybody at the team Andretti Autosport for this result for the Window World Cares and DHL car. My guys hung in there all day,” said Conway.

“I made a mistake on a pit stop when I locked up. I thought our day might be done, but we had to hang in there and push all the way. On the restarts the car was awesome and it just came to life.”

Conway became IndyCar’s first inaugural winner sicne Briscoe in Milwaukee in 2008 and it was Andretti Autosport’s first victory since June at Iowa Speedway.

Five different teams were represented in the top five with Briscoe running third and defending series champion Dario Franchitti finished third.

“The car was really quick everywhere except for turn into the straight and down the straight. I think with the gear ratio and setting up for the wrong parts of the track made it hard for me to pass anyone because of the gap they would get coming out of the hairpin. It was an interesting day for me. It has been a long time since the radio failed. After the first stop, it went out so we were getting wrong signals and mixed calls,” Franchitt said.

“I caught a little bit of luck to get on the podium because the other guys took each other out. I almost got caught up in one incident because I locked the wheels up and we did the best we could to avoid the incident. I struggled on the out lap after my last pit stop and I don’t know if it was the car or something I need to work on but we lost a lot of time there. Overall it was a good day for Target Chip Ganassi Racing to be on the podium and I am pleased to be first in points for the championship running.”

James Hinchcliffe, competing in his second IndyCar event, was fourth and followed by Alex Tagliani.
