Elizabethtown, NJ, United States (AHN Sports) – Spencer Massey scored his second straight win of the season Sunday in the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Joining Massey on the winner’s podium was Mike Neff (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) at the eighth of 22 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

“It’s awesome to beat the Alan Johnson/Al-Anabi/Del Worsham car in the final,” said Massey. “The Al-Anabi car has been on a roll and running killer numbers, so we knew we had to be on our ‘A’ game, that the car had to run well and I had to be on my game. I even had a Full Throttle to amp myself up before I got in there.”

In the Top Fuel final, Massey got his fourth career win when he made a winning pass of 319.07 mph in topping Worsham.

In the Funny Car final, Neff held off top qualifer Cruz Pedregon for his second win of the season. Neff’s run of 314.09 was solid after Pedregon red-lighted at the start.

“I knew he red-lighted,” said Neff. “I was sitting there waiting for the Tree to come down, and I heard him leave and knew he red-lighted because the Tree hadn’t come down yet. I looked over and saw that his bulb was red, then I looked up and saw our win light on.

“By that time, I had already hit the gas and was taking off and saw our win light on. I wanted to see what it would run, then I was saying ‘Don’t drive over the centerline or something.’ Wouldn’t you lose if you did that? Yeah, maybe I should have lifted.”

In the Pro Stock final, Johnson held off rookie sensation Vincent Nobile for his first win of the season.

Johnson’s pass of 210.64 mph was unnecessary after Nobile red-lighted at the start.

“It was a dream to have an all-team final round and to have it happen this early in the season is a dream come true,” said Johnson, who provides engines for Nobile. “I’m very proud of our engine guys and Mark (Ingersoll, crew chief) who makes the tuning calls. Vincent is a fierce competitor and I’m sure we’re going to tangle a few more times before this is over.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Smith held off points leader Karen Stoffer to grab his first win of the season.

Oxfam warns about rising global food prices as one-sixth of all people go hungry

Linda Young – AHN News Writer

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – Oxfam warns that as global food prices continue to increase the resultant hardship caused to people who were already struggling to obtain adequate amounts of food is increasing demands for a major reform in global food prices.

When world food prices reached a new historic peak in January, it left over a billion people, or one-sixth of the world’s population, hungry and millions of people under threat of starvation, with the situation expected to worsen, Oxfam officials say.

Oxfam is calling on world leaders to act to improve the regulation of food markets. In addition, it is asking for investment in a global climate fund.

World food prices have more than doubled since 1990, but the incomes of the poor have not.

“Poor people in developing countries spend between 50-80% of their income on food, making higher prices, as well as unpredictable prices, a serious threat to their ability to eat – let alone continue spending on other basic needs such as health, or education,” Oxfam officials say in a statement posted on the website.

The key drivers of rising food prices are reduced production caused by bad weather that might be linked to climate change; export restrictions and panic buying mostly caused by weather related problems; increased demand for food and for biofuels, which removes land from food production; financial disruptions, including low interest rates, depreciation of the dollar and speculation in commodity markets; and increased oil prices that increased the costs of fertilizer for crops and transportation to get food to market or stores.
