Dan Wheldon’s Indy 500 win follows JR Hildebrand’s misfortune

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Indianapolis, IN, United States (AHN Sports) – It was a bizarre and heart-breaking finish — and reminscent of the one nine years ago — but after videos were reviewed Dan Wheldon was named the winner Sunday in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

JR Hildebrand was bearing down on the biggest win in his career, and the IZOD IndyCar Series, when he struck the wall exiting the final turn, handing the win to Wheldon.

Hildebrand was leading on the final lap and came up on lapped traffic in the final turn of the race. With a four-second lead he went for the pass Instead of slowing up, got into marbles higher up on the track and slid into the outside wall.

Just seconds from the finish line, Wheldon sped by Hildebrand’s crimpled ride and was first across the finish line. IndyCar officials viewed video to insure Wheldon had made the pass before the caution was displayed.

Had Wheldon passed him when the caution was already out, Hildebrand would’ve been crowned the winner — much like 2002 when Paul Tracy passed Helio Castroneves, who was declared the winner.

It was the second Indy 500 win for Wheldon, who without a ride was making his first start of the season after winning this race six years ago. The official finish of the race was not displayed until more than two hours after it ended.

Hildebrand’s crumpled ride slid across the finish line in second on a day when defending champ Dario Franchitti, 2008 winner Scott Dixon, Graham Rahal and Danica Patrick all took turns running up front, but Patrick had to pit for fuel with nine laps left.

Wheldon lost his ride at Panther Racing and was replaced by Hildebrand, but couldn’t land a ride this season until signing a one-race deal with Bryan Herta Autosport.

Wheldon didn’t lead a lap until the last one, the first time that’s happened since Joe Dawson won the second Indy 500.

Rahal finished third, followed by Tony Kanaan, Oriol Servia, Dixon and Franchitti.

How To Find Good & Cheap Car Insurance Using Multiple Quotes

May 30th, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans

If you are looking for car insurance, then chances are you’ll want to get the most bang for your buck. A lot of people opt for simple liability insurance only, which is what most states require as the bare-bones minimum coverage allowed by law. Other drivers, including those who have taken out an auto loan or who are more at risk to get in an accident will most likely need to spend more. In this case, comprehensive as well as collision insurance is a good idea to have and in the case of a car loan, required by the bank.

The amount of insurance companies available today that offer coverage can be dizzying, and with the onset of the internet there are even more than ever before. Several companies operate exclusively online, while other more well known providers simply offer car insurance in a more traditional sense. Shopping around for the best deal is the key to getting the best rate, but can be a difficult task. Luckily there are websites online now that allow you to fill out some basic personal information, submit the form and get auto insurance rate quotes instantly from the top competing companies. This can be a huge time saver and can be done any time without having to even pick up the phone. The best part about this is that the results are literally instant; there is no waiting on hold with a boring sales rep!

Pinching pennies and tightening our belts is something we all are sadly forced to do in this depressed economy. The good news is that you don’t have to spend any more than you should on car insurance if you just take a little time researching and shopping around! Good luck!

Transportation workers sick-outs mar Trenton, N.J. school bus service

May 29th, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans

Trenton, NJ, United States (AHN) – Trenton Public Schools officials are working to continue bus service for students after transportation workers started a sick-out late in the week.

As state budget wrangling continues, the district is moving ahead with plans to privatize its school bus service, contending it could save about $2 million.

About half (15) of the district’s 29 transportation workers reportedly called in sick Thursday, though the number was reduced to about a third (9) Friday according to a school official. The 29 are a part of 196 school employees who recently learned they would lose their jobs to reduce the district’s school budget.

A report in the Trentonian stated 300 to 400 students missed school due to the school bus situation.

“So each of the (seven) drivers had to make three different runs, but that only covers 21 schools. There are 36 schools. Some students have to go to special schools as far out as Neptune. It’s a terrible mess. Kids are calling on the phones, left to stay at home, no way to get to school. Their parents have to take a bus to work, so they drop their child off, counting on a school bus to take them to school. Often they’re not picked up,” a source told the paper.

A school official admitted as much in a letter posted on the district’s website and sent home with students.

“We are experiencing a job action among our bus drivers,” interim superintendent Raymond Broach wrote. “This is causing delays in the pickup and delivery of our students and in some cases, (we’re) not picking up at all.”

With the drivers losing their jobs anyway, they will likely not be punished for their actions and the district will call upon drivers from other companies it has deals with — Rick Bus Co. and Delaware Valley Bus Line — to cover the gap in service, according to a report on nj.com.

Trenton Public Schools may get $12 million in additional school funding due to a recent action by the state legislature, but will still seek an outside vendor for its school bus service.

Auto Insurance Liability Comprehensive Coverage Illinois Indiana Chicago

May 28th, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans

Who needs auto insurance? State laws typically say that as a driver, you either must have insurance, or be able to provide evidence that you have the financial resources to pay a judgment against you. If you should cause injury or damage to another person, an insurance policy is the easiest way to document that you can pay damages if you must. You also need auto insurance to protect yourself financially. If you or anyone, for whom you’re responsible for, seriously injures another person, you can be held liable for the injured person’s medical expenses, rehabilitative therapy, and long term nursing care, as well as for his or her lost earnings. “I need insurance today” If you need immediate coverage you will need to provide proof of your name, birth date and address, and the car’s VIN number (located on the dashboard near the windshield). When shopping for coverage you should consider what it is you do for a living and the distance you drive from work and school. If you have other drivers in the household, they need to be insured as well. Customers must decide if they want liability coverage or full coverage, which is mandatory if you owe any money on your car. Additional medical coverage is optional. You may not immediately think that you need towing or rental insurance but take some time to consider what you would do in the event of your car breaking down miles away from a shop. It will need to be towed, which is often charged by the mile. You’ll also need to pay for a rental car while it’s being repaired. Here are some other things to consider: What Liability insurance covers:

  • Bodily Injury – This covers any bodily injury to the other party. It will cover $20,000 per person & $40,000 per occurrence.
  • Property Damage – This covers any property damage that you may have caused to the other party. It will cover $15,000 per occurrence.
  • Uninsured Motorists – This pays you and passengers in the insured vehicle monetary damages to recover from bodily injury or death caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run motorist. It will cover $20,000 per person & $40,000 per occurrence. This is only for your bodily injury, not damage to your vehicle.
  • Medical- You can also get Medical Payments with your Liability policy. This is an optional coverage, offered at the customers’ request. Medical payments will cover your medical coverage in the event you got hurt during a car accident.

What Full Coverage includes:

  • Collision – Pays for loss or damage to your vehicle caused by collision with another vehicle or object. Payments are made based upon actual cash value of the amount of each loss above the deductible amount.
  • Comprehensive – Pays for loss or damage to your vehicle caused by fire, theft, vandalism, hail, windstorms, riots, falling objects, floods, etc. Payments are made based upon actual cash value of the amount of each loss above the deductible amount
  • Repair Deductible- You will have to pay a deductible to get your vehicle fixed. You pay your deductible and the Company will pay the rest. The higher your deductible is the less you will pay for insurance. You can go with a $1,000.00; $500.00; or a $250.00 deductible.
  • Rental- This coverage will reimburse the insured in the event they have to rent a vehicle due to their vehicle being in the shop due to an accident. Depending on the Insurance Company that they have, they will cover for so much for so many days. Refer to the Insured’s policy for this information.
  • Towing- Coverage is also available as an optional coverage. This will reimburse the insured for so much if their vehicle had to get towed. Refer to the Insured’s policy for this information.
  • Loss Payee / Lien Holder -The Bank or Financial Institution who the insured is financing their vehicle through will require to be listed on the insured’s physical damage policy. This is so that in the event something happens to the insured’s vehicle, it is considered a total loss and they get paid for the value of the car, less the deductible. They will apply check from the Insurance Company towards the insured’s loan balance and any remainder they will give to the insured.

Shopping for car insurance can be intimidating. Having a conversation with an expert who goes through this process hundreds of times a month can offer comfort and simplify things. Most people want to be responsible drivers and also save money. We will automatically quote our customers the state requirements unless they ask for the higher limits. Marco Andretti, Alex Lloyd bump into Indy 500

May 23rd, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Indianapolis, IN, United States (AHN Sports) – It was Bump Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Marco Andretti and Alex Lloyd bumped their way into next Sunday’s 100th Indianapolis 500.

With dramatic qualifying runs in the final 10 minutes, the two were nine drivers among 14 looking to secure a spot in the 33-car grid.

“I wonder if the track just got better, or what. I knew we were going to be hanging it out at the end there,” Andretti said. “Our approach was we’re going home anyway. Really, I mean, the way we went out, it was either stick it in the fence or stick it in the show. So luckily we were on the upside of that.”

The six-hour qualifying session was interrupted twice by rain and with 75 minutes left, Danica Patrick put the No. 7 car solidly in the field with a four-lap average of 224.861 mph.

Eight drivers failed to gain enough speed to force Andretti to re-qualify until Lloyd of Dale Coyne Racing, who finished fourth in the Indy 500 last May, put together an average speed of 223.917 mph.

“It’s been probably one of the most stressful weekends I think I’ve had in my career,” Lloyd said. “I remember it last year, we had to qualify on Bump Day last year. I remember that being pretty stressful, and I didn’t want anything to do with it this year. Fortunately, last year we got in comfortably on Bump Day; we had the speed.”

Mike Conway was among the entrants who failed to qualify and also not making the show were Raphael Matos, Sebastian Saavedra and Jakes. Dragon Racing’s Ho-Pin Tung and Scott Speed did not complete qualifying attempts.

Lloyd will be joined on the last row by rookie Pippa Mann of Conquest Racing and Ana Beatriz of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. Andretti will start on Row 10 with rookie Charlie Kimball and Graham Rahal, while Paul Tracy will share Row 9 with Patrick and Ryan Briscoe.

This is the closest matched field by time in Indianapolis 500 history — 2.5399 seconds separate fastest qualifier Alex Tagliani and slowest qualifier Beatriz. The record was 3.0622 seconds set in 2010.

Cars trump guns as cause of death in Middle East

May 17th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
The Media Line Staff

Jerusalem, Israel David Rosenberg – The Middle East and North Africa capture the world’s headlines when there’s a war, a terror attack or a bloody government crackdown. But the deaths caused by soldiers and gunmen are tiny compared to the carnage that the region’s residents create getting behind the wheel of a car.

Some 72,000 people died in road accidents in 2007, the last year for which comparative data are available, in the countries ranging from Morocco to Iran, according to data compiled by the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO). That’s more than twice the number in the U.S., even though the Middle East’s population of 390 million that year was just 60 percent bigger and the number of cars on the road is far smaller.

WHO believes the death toll on the region’s roads is considerably higher – perhaps 120,000 — because many countries don’t report all their fatalities.

“They are very high. There about 32 per 100,000 population and the global average is about 18.8 and in the European region it’s about 13,” Tami Toroyan, who is responsible for WHO’s global reporting on road safety, told The Media Line, citing estimated 2004 numbers. “In the Middle East it’s a leading cause of death, but it hasn’t received public attention.”

The U.N. organization is just getting interested in road safety and published its first report comparing international rates of road accidents in 2009. WHO is worried that as the world grows wealthier and more people take to the road, the number of accidents will grow. Seven years ago, road accidents were the ninth leading cause of death around the world; by 2030 they could be the fifth, outpacing HIV/AIDS and lung cancer, according to WHO.

As it launched on May 11 its “Decade of Road Safety,” Toroyan is compiling new data that will serve as a benchmark for measuring whether the next decade’s worth of efforts at reducing traffic accidents succeeded.

The Middle East has the most to gain from any improvement. In 2004, the last year for which there is figures, it was the sixth-leading cause of death, three places ahead of war and conflict. Most critically, they strike the youngest and most productive members of society: Among children age 5-14 and adults 30-44, it’s the second leading cause of death. Among young people in between, it’s No. 1, according to WHO.

It also weighs down on economies, struggling with high rates of population growth and high unemployment. WHO estimates road deaths cost the region, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, some $7.5 billion annually. Iran and Jordan have both independently estimated that accidents lowered gross domestic product by about 2 percent.

More worryingly, death from roads happen just as frequently among the Middle East’s rich countries as among its poor, in contrast to much of the world where money buys better roads and safer cars. Based on WHO’s estimate for real, rather than reported fatalities, in Saudi Arabia, the rate is 29 deaths in 2008 per 100,000 population, close to the median for the region, while in Qatar its 23.7 and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the rate is 37.1.

Among poorer countries, the rate is higher – Libyans died in automobile accidents last year at a rate of 40.5 per 100,000 people, just behind Egypt’s 41.6. That makes Egypt the second-deadliest place in the world to drive after the tiny Cook Islands, whose 13,000 people suffered six deaths in 2008.

“No one follows any rules … There needs to be a traffic officer by every light in order for people to abide by the law,” Joseph Fahim, an editor with the Daily News Egypt, said about his fellow drivers in Cairo in an interview with The Media Line. “We don’t have the concept of people sticking to the lanes.”

Some 40 percent of the country lives on less than $2 a day and the number of drivers is 4.3 million in a population of close to 80 million. But some 17 million people are squeezed into greater Cairo, creating huge traffic jams and masses of pedestrians vulnerable to being hit by a car. Motor scooters and other small vehicles that fill the city’s streets are more risk-laden than sedans and trucks. Once you leave the “nightmare” of Cairo even into the suburbs, driving is safer.

Why can’t the Middle East learn to drive?

The WHO’s Toroyan attributes the problem to several factors. One is the rapid pace of car usage over the last decades which has in many places outpaced the development of infrastructure. The region’s population is very young, and young drivers all around the world are the worst. The ban on alcohol by Islam, by far the predominant faith of the region, creates problems, as well.

“A lot of countries in the Middle East don’t have drunk-driving laws because alcohol is officially banned,” she said. In addition, road safety takes back seat to other health issues. “In a lot of countries there has been a lack of ownership of the issue. It falls between the cracks.”

However, Dubai, with one of the world’s highest auto death tolls, is cracking down on bad driving. Police estimate that road deaths increased 60 percent between 1998 and 2007 before starting to head downwards as authorities got tough on bad driving. Still, a fender-bender occurred about every three minutes in the tiny emirate.

Last year, police in Dubai, one of the UAE’s constituent emirates, embarked on a campaign to reduce the number of road fatalities to zero per 100,000 people by 2020. Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim says he wants to make Dubai roads among the safest in the world through a campaign of carrots, sticks and education.

Police unveiled a plan on Monday to reward good drivers with “white points” that allow them to remove minor violations from their driving record. For the incorrigible, police have installed a system that links speed cameras, radar guns and traffic-light cameras with roaming police vehicles. Within minutes of being identified, speeders and other violators of traffic laws can expect to be pulled over by a patrol car. For the next generation, the Roads and Transport Authority has begun a program of lectures and promotional literature to teach about the dangers of speeding and the need to wear seat belts.

“We aim to achieve zero fatalities from road accidents by 2020; this is no doubt an ambitious target,” said Maj. Gen. Saif Al Zafein, director-general of Dubai Traffic Police.

David E. Miller contributed to this story.
