Lebanese don’t know their national anthem, poll finds

April 29th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
The Media Line Staff

Beirut, Lebanon David E. Miller – Imagine 10,000 fans standing up at the start of a soccer match in Beirut to sing the national anthem. Statistically speaking, however, most of them – some 9, 500 – will be faking it, because they don’t know the words.

That’s what a survey released this week by the National Campaign to Memorize the Lebanese Anthem, a group devoted to instilling their countrymen with patriotic spirit, says. It found that only 5 percent of a countrywide sample group of 2,000 people could recite the words of “All Together for the Country” by heart.

The survey’s findings came as a surprise to many, but – like much else in Lebanon – they disagreed on what kind of surprise it was.

“I would have thought more people would know it,” Jad Aoun, a Maronite Christian who blogs at Lebanon News: Under the Rug Swept, told The Media Line. “It’s quite alarming.”

But Hilal Khashan, a political scientist at the American University of Beirut, was surprised that even 5 percent knew the lyrics. “We used to make fun of the anthem in the Sunni school I attended,” Khashan said. “We were taught that Lebanese identity meant nothing, that it was an artificial European creation.”

Lebanon is a famously divided country, split along sectarian lines that dictate not only politics but living arrangements and standards of living. The Lebanese fought a 15-year civil war that left a quarter of a million casualties. Even today, many are mindful of how tenuous social peace remains.

The song “Kulluna lil Watan ” in Arabic was adopted as Lebanon’s national anthem in 1927, seven years after Greater Lebanon was proclaimed by the French, who administered the territories of current-day Syria and Lebanon. Its lyrics of about 170 words (see below) celebrate the country’s mountainous geography and legendary cedars and allude to a history stretching back to the seafaring Phoenicians.

Khashan faults the anthem for exalting Lebanese nationalism and for its allusions to the Phoenicians, believed by Lebanese nationalists to be their forefathers. The words deliberately erase the Arab Muslim history of Lebanon, he said.

“The idea of the anthem, created in the spirit of European nationalism in the 1930s, was not of integration but of exclusion,” Khashan said. “It tries to separate Lebanon from its Arab surroundings.”

Lebanese Christians try to emphasize Lebanon’s unique identity, but Muslims, such as himself, viewed the country as part of the wider Arab world, Khashan said. “I belong to the 95 percent of Lebanese who don’t know the anthem,” he proudly told The Media Line. “The campaign won’t work. Even if kids learn the anthem, its contents will ring hollow to them.”

Words like that alarm Muhammad Dib, who launched the anthem memorization campaign. “The national anthem is a symbol for the nation,” he told Lebanon’s Daily Star. “The reason so few people know it in Lebanon is weak faith in the nation … a lack of attachment to the country and a lack of belonging and awareness.”

Dib decided to tackle the issue in a staged campaign. Starting with a Facebook page, which garnered 2,400 supporters, he next set up what he calls “love roadblocks” across the country where the words of the anthem are distributed to passing drivers.

It is also is aimed at the young, who are the best candidates for getting “All Together for the Country” permanently imprinted on their brains, via educational campaigns in schools and universities.

Imad Bazzi, who advocates an end to Lebanon’s sectarian system on his popular blog Trella, said he finds it hard to believe that a mere 5 percent of Lebanese know the national anthem as Dib’s survey found. Lebanese are regularly exposed to the anthem in school, on national holidays and at the start and finish of the daily broadcast on national television., he said.

“What really worries me is the fact that a huge number of Lebanese don’t have the sense of belonging to their country,” he told The Media Line. “This may explain why they say they don’t know the national anthem [when they actually do].”

Bazzi said that decades of political and social instability in Lebanon caused a massive flight of Lebanese out of the country, weakening the remainders’ sense of belonging. “They lost hope of change and reform,” he said. “Even worse, we have no common understanding of our national identity. Phoenician? Arab? Middle Eastern?”

Aoun, the Maronite blogger, said teaching the national anthem in all Lebanese schools would greatly reduce the problem. “I know that in private schools it’s not done. Reciting the national anthem in school every morning should be made obligatory,” he said. “My primary school education was in the U.S. and although I’m not an American citizen, I know their national anthem by heart.”

“All Together for the Country” is usually thought to have been composed by the Lebanese Wadi Sabra, founder of the National Higher Conservatory of Music, with lyrics by Rashid Nakhle. But a recent documentary aired on Al-Jadeed television station claimed that the tune was plagiarized from a song written in honor of a Moroccan independence leader.

The expose set off a flurry of Facebook pages demanding to change the anthem. Al-Jadeed reported that Culture Minister Salim Wardeh has set up a committee to examine the allegations.

“Maybe we can create a more meaningful anthem,” a page titled “The People Want to Change the Lebanese National Anthem” declared.

All Together for the Country

All Together, For the Country, for the Glory and the Flag!

Our valor and our writings are the envy of the ages.

Our mountains and our valleys, they bring forth stalwart men.

And to Perfection we devote our words and labor.

All Together, For the Country, for the Glory and the Flag!

All Together, For the Country

Our Elders and our children, they await our Country’s call,

And on the Day of Crisis they are as Lions of the Jungle.

The heart of our East is ever Lebanon,

May God preserve it until the end of time.

All Together, For the Country, for the Glory and the Flag!

All Together, For the Country

The Gems of the East are its land and its sea.

Throughout the world its good deeds flow from pole to pole.

And its name is its glory since time began.

The cedars are its pride, its immortality’s symbol.

All Together, For the Country, for the Glory and Flag!

All Together, For the Country

Boston brooms: Garnett, Rondo deliver double-doubles, C’s sweep Knicks

April 25th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
AHN Sports Staff

New York, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Kevin Garnett scored 26 points and hauled 10 boards to lead the Boston Celtics to a series-clinching 101-89 victory against the New York Knicks Sunday in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series at Madison Square Garden.

Coming off a four-point effort in Game 3, Garnett bounced back in a big way, unleashing his old dominant self against the reeling Knicks.

Garnett shot 10-for-16 on the floor and knocked down all of his six free throws to give the Celtics their first playoff-series sweep of the Big 3 era.

All-Star guard Rajon Rondo dominated again the backcourt matchup as he chipped in 21 points, 12 dimes, and 5 boards in 41 minutes.

The Celtics showed their intention right away, racing to a 29-23 lead at the end of the first period.

Backup forward Glen Davis then opened up the second quarter with two straight baskets to ignite a 13-5 spurt on their way to taking a 17-point cushion at the break.

With good execution and solid team defense, the Celtics controlled the pace of the game into the third and seemed destined for another blowout victory at the Garden.

However, the Knicks pulled off a desperate run in the fourth behind a hot-shooting Carmelo Anthony, who finished with 32 points and 9 boards.

The Knicks even cut down the deficit to four points, 84-80 with over 7 minutes left to play, but the Celtics responded with better defense and big baskets down the stretch to pull away for good.

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined for 27 points and Davis contributed 14 points off the bench.

Meanwhile, Amare Stoudemire chalked up 19 points and 12 boards, but the Knicks missed the leadership of guard Chauncey Billups, who went down in Game 1 and didn’t return.

Rebounding was again a key factor in the game as the Celtics grabbed 11 more boards than the Knicks. The Celtics also shot .494 from the field, while the Knicks settled for just .341 shooting.

The Celtics advanced to their fourth consecutive Conference semifinal appearance and will face either the Miami Heat or the Philadelphia 76ers next week.

The Myths of Auto Insurance

April 25th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans

It’s actually amazing how some myths never seem to change. This is not like some organized religion which has Gods and monsters walking around on Earth. This is stories about how to insure vehicles. It should all be easy to understand yet, year in, year out, you see the same misconceptions. Take the idea it costs more to insure red cars. This probably all started with the behavior of some boy racers at stop lights. They sit with their feet gently pumping the gas, anticipating the green and waiting to burn rubber. Those of you into psychology will also know the color red attracts more attention. If the same young drivers were sitting in a green car, fewer people would take any notice. But with smoke rising from the blacktop, we all see the red. Except, when it comes to calculating the premium rates, the color of the vehicle is irrelevant. Yes to the make and model, the driver’s age and safety record. But the statistics show there’s no different in the number of accidents between colors.

Secondly, there are odd stories about the cost of insurance rising as we grow older. Those of you who have driven from your teen years will know the rates steadily fall as we pass through our twenties and are at their lowest through to about 55. It’s at this point the myths kick in. Yet the reality is the insurers often allow discounts to older drivers who complete an accident prevention course. If you have reached this magic age, you should check with your insurer to see which courses are currently approved. The most common are run by the AARP and are defensive in nature. They reflect the fact we all slow down as we age and our eyes are no longer sharp as the eagle.

Then we get all these stories that your credit score has no bearing on your premium rates. Sadly, this is wrong. Insurers are very interested in how well you manage your money. Those who are not as responsible with their cash are viewed with suspicion. From the other side, those with the best scores are quoted the best rates. Then some people forget to read their policy and convince themselves they are always covered if someone steals their vehicle or it’s struck by lightning and set on fire – like Jehovah was angry with them. Except this coverage only applies if you have paid for a comprehensive policy. Most people who don’t have an auto loan and drive something older, drop the optional coverage of collision and comprehensive to save money.

Finally, some people seem to think our military pays more to insure their vehicles. Actually, it’s the other way round. Every serving member of the military and their families are entitled to a discount. It’s one of the benefits of signing up to defend our country. Stay home and be safe as a civilian – there’s no special treatment. So, when you set out to get auto insurance quotes, make sure you have your facts straight and ask for the discounts you are entitled to. No one protects you from yourself. Forget the myths and get the auto insurance quotes based on the facts.

Supporters of new Ivory Coast president clash in Abidjan

April 23rd, 2011 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Auto Loans
Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Abidjan, Ivory Coast (AHN) – Clashes continue to rock Ivory Coast, breaking the few days of peace that came with the capture of former President Laurent Gbagbo last week by United Nations forces. This time, the exchange of fire was among supporters of new Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara.

Reports said the clashes took place Thursday in the commercial capital of Abidjan between the Commandos group and troops from northern regions of Ivory Coast. The Commandos control parts of Abidjan.

The exchange of gun fire lasted for about half an hour and caused panic among residents. The clash was apparently a power struggle between the two groups, representing an early split in the loose coalition.

The core group that supported Ouattara in his battle to unseat the overstaying Gbagbo were former rebels called the New Forces. They largely controlled the northern part of Ivory Coast. Together, the New Forces were joined by the Commandos, which gained control of Abidjan, leading to the eventual fall of Gbagbo.

The Commandos are led by former rebel commander Ibrahim Coulibaly, who was an ex-bodyguard of Ouattara. Coulibaly is seeking recognition for the Commandos’ role in unseating Gbagbo, but his group is also accused of rampant looting of businesses and cars during the crisis, and extorting money from drivers in Abidjan.

It was a temporary joining of forces between two groups unfamiliar with each other, thus after achieving their common goal of ousting Gbagbo, conflicts were bound to happen.

Ouattara has stated he would seek prosecution at the international and national level all those who committed atrocities during the period when the country was trying to oust Gbagbo. He said he would ask the International Criminal Court to investigate the killings of civilians by members of the former president’s forces and his own supporters – the New Forces and Commando included.

A 2007 report prepared by London-based NGO Global Witness linked Ivory Coast’s cocoa industry with funding of Gbagbo’s purchase of arms used to kill civilians during his 10-year term.

The arms were used to commit what the global community considers one of the worst human rights abuses on record. Gbagbo managed to buy weapons although there was a U.N. arms embargo on Ivory Coast.

Mike Conway wins Grand Prix of Long Beach

April 18th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Auto Loans
Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Long Beach, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – Mike Conway completed his comeback from a crash last year by passing Ryan Briscoe late in the race to win Sunday’s Grand Prix of Long Beach IZOD IndyCar Series race.

Conway, who sustained serious injuries in the 2010 Indianapolis 500, got around Briscoe in Turn 6 on Lap 72 of 85 to capture the 37th running of the race.

“It feels awesome. As soon as I got in the lead, I was thinking of winning already. I knew I had to forget about it and get with the job at hand. The car was great. I could push all the time and control the gap. I can’t thank everybody at the team Andretti Autosport for this result for the Window World Cares and DHL car. My guys hung in there all day,” said Conway.

“I made a mistake on a pit stop when I locked up. I thought our day might be done, but we had to hang in there and push all the way. On the restarts the car was awesome and it just came to life.”

Conway became IndyCar’s first inaugural winner sicne Briscoe in Milwaukee in 2008 and it was Andretti Autosport’s first victory since June at Iowa Speedway.

Five different teams were represented in the top five with Briscoe running third and defending series champion Dario Franchitti finished third.

“The car was really quick everywhere except for turn into the straight and down the straight. I think with the gear ratio and setting up for the wrong parts of the track made it hard for me to pass anyone because of the gap they would get coming out of the hairpin. It was an interesting day for me. It has been a long time since the radio failed. After the first stop, it went out so we were getting wrong signals and mixed calls,” Franchitt said.

“I caught a little bit of luck to get on the podium because the other guys took each other out. I almost got caught up in one incident because I locked the wheels up and we did the best we could to avoid the incident. I struggled on the out lap after my last pit stop and I don’t know if it was the car or something I need to work on but we lost a lot of time there. Overall it was a good day for Target Chip Ganassi Racing to be on the podium and I am pleased to be first in points for the championship running.”

James Hinchcliffe, competing in his second IndyCar event, was fourth and followed by Alex Tagliani.

You can use the loan calculator tools for calculating the monthly lease amount. There are many online auto loan calculator tools that will help you to calculate the monthly lease amount.

Buying the car on lease will be more economical though at the completion of the lease you will end-up paying more amount than the original amount of the car. The only advantage of buying the car on lease is that you don’t have to pay whole amount at a time; instead you can pay the amount in installments. There are number of auto loan providers and the interest charged for such loans vary from lender to lender. Instead of wasting time in visiting every loan provider and knowing the loan procedure and rate of interest on the auto loan, you can save your time by calculating the loan amount and monthly installment on that amount by the use of loan calculator tools. Just by entering few variables, you can get the desired results instantly.

How to Calculate Car Lease Payment?

  • When you are thinking of buying a car on lease, you should calculate the monthly installment amount that you will have to pay every month. Also, you should decide on what repayment period would be affordable to you for the completed payment of loan. Gather all the information that will be necessary for calculating the lease payment. These details include MSRP of car, rate of interest for lease, term of the lease, residual value of lease. This information can be found on the site of the loan provider or the bank financing the lease.
  • Calculate how much you will use the car’s value by multiplying the MSRP with the residual value and subtracting the product from negotiated price of car.
  • The amount of car’s value can be broken down into monthly payments by dividing the amount by number of months of lease. For example, if the lease term continues for 36 months and the car’s value is $8000, you can do $8000/36. The monthly lease payment will be the resulting answer which is $222.22
  • The interest amount can be calculated by adding residual value and negotiated price and multiplying the sum by the money factor.
  • Multiply the monthly lease payment with the sales tax of the state to get the monthly tax payment and add it to the monthly lease payment.

Using the auto loan calculator tools you will save the time required for doing calculations. You will just have to enter the required variables in the appropriate columns and the desired result for the monthly lease payment amount will be generated within seconds.
