Avondale, FL, United States (AHN Sports) – Kyle Busch held off a challenge from Carl Edwards to win Saturday’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. His 44th Nationwide win came less than 24 hours after he scored his 25th Camping World Truck Series win on the very same track.
To score the Nationwide win, Busch had to hold off the challenge of fellow former Nationwide champion Carl Edwards, who finished .514 seconds behind Busch.
“We made a run. I did everything but move (Busch) out of the way and I thought about that, but he did a great job. Those guys did well. He drove that car. It was loose and he did a good job hanging on to it,” said Edwards. “I’ve got to thank Ford. This Ford Mustang is fast. My guys have been working hard all winter. The engine was good. All the guys at the shop did a great job and we’re gonna start on the pole tomorrow, so this is gonna be fun.”
Busch put together the perfecta and will go for the rare weekend NASCAR sweep on Sunday when he competes in the Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix.
The newlywed driver pulled off the rare sweep of winning all three NASCAR events last August in Bristol and he achieved another milestone Saturday when he became the first driver to lead every lap of a Nationwide event since Dale Earnhardt Jr. did so on July 4, 2003 at Daytona.
Finishing behind Busch and Edwards was Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman and Reed Sorenson, who leads the series points after just two race.
Rounding out the top-10 finishers was Joey Logano, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Justin Allgaier, Brian Scott and Kenny Wallace.
Danica Patrick scored her third consecutive top-20 finish by coming home 17th and defending series champion Brad Keselowski had another off day, blowing a right-front tire and hitting the Turn 4 wall.
“Just a tough break for this Discount Tire Dodge. I’m not sure exactly what happened, all that I know is that we blew up a right-front tire and I ended up throwing the car into the Turn 4 wall,” said Keselowski. “We had a decent race car, but not exactly what we needed here today to win a race. We showed some tire wear in our first pit stop and I started to get concerned.
“We were late in the run and I started to feel a vibration. I had a feeling that I may be in trouble. That’s racing. We’ve been lucky to miss incidents all last year that helped us win the championship and now, this year, we’re two-for-two in DNF’s. ”
